husky pup and upset stomach

Question
QUESTION: I have read some Q's and A's regarding Huskies stomachs, our pup is 4 months old and every time we try and feed her commercial food she gets the serious runs. We started giving her cooked rice and chicken, which seems to solve the problem until we try and incorporate the dry food. We have tried all different brands, which don't help and now we are considering a raw diet. Do you have any portion recommendations for growing pups?

Thanks

ANSWER: It completely depends on the type of food and energy level of the pup.  The more dense the food is (packed with proteins and calories), the less you need to feed.  A general recommendation would be for a four month old pup on a super premium food (~25-30% fat, ~25-30% protein), would need about two to three cups of food per day.  If you are using food with less than that on the crude analysis, then you may need to increase the amount some.

Keep in mind that Siberians don't require a lot of food, so that can be a problem if you are over-feeding.  At no point did my dogs ever exceed 4 cups per day (and now they are on 1 cup per day as adults).  The 4 cups was short-lived, but around 6 months old.

Hope that helps and feel free to write back with additional questions or concerns.

QUESTION: Thanks for the tips...I never really thought that I may be over feeding her. So if I tried getting her on a raw diet would I still follow the portion recommendations of 2 or 3 cups mentioned above?

Answer
If you move over to a raw diet, I would do some more research.  Raw is something relatively unexplored by me, although I do supplement with raw every once in a while (and I just basically guess on portions).  However, if you are maintaining a raw diet exclusively, check into it more and see what you should be feeding.  If you only supplement with raw, I would say 2-3 cups total per day.
