Husky mix and kids

Question
Ms. Campbell:

My question is about my 6-year-old husky mix. I've had him since he was 8 months old and he's been to obedience training. He's a great dog, very sweet, although he definitely has the husky wandering quality. My problem: Over the years, he's developed more and more of a dislike for kids. He growls and barks at them if they walk by, especially if they run or bike by. It's gotten to the point where I keep him away from kids if we go to the park, on walks. The people I sometimes kennel him with have 3 kids, and I've warned the owners, but he's gotten to know them and is fine with them.

Is there anything I can do to overcome this? I'd like to have a child myself in the next few years and I'm worried.

Answer
Dear Kim,
Well you would have to wonder if something has gone on with some kids and your dog that you do not know about.Perhaps he was hurt or scared by some children at some time. The only real thing you can do is to do what you have already done and that is supervise him carefully when around children.Kids can at times be rather a strain on a dog,and at times they can be too boisterous, this can all get too much for some dogs.Huskies usually are great with kids, but even the most tolerant dog does not appreciate being hassled at times. So the best thing you can do is supervise your dog and let all children understand that he has his limits too.I think with a sensible approach you should have no more trouble.
I hope that i have helped.Good luck faye and Husky Crew.
