Question
Hi,

I have just purchased a pure breed Sib - husky from a breeder.  Everything is going well and he is healthy on all accounts but he weighs in at 23pounds or 10.5kg and is 10.5 weeks old.
After reading all the weights on this site it seems he is very heavy for his age.
His mother weighs in at a average female weight but his father was 110pound or 50kg of solid muscle dog.
I was just wondering what are your thoughts on this and is it common to get huskies weigh in that heavy? as i cant seem to find much info on it?

Kind regards
Adam

Answer
Well, for a Siberian Husky, the sire would be completely outside of the standard that the American Kennel Club uses (which is my experience living in the US) and also outside of the standard for the UKC, etc.  Sibe dogs should top out at really no more than about 60 lbs. or so.  A lot of people confuse Siberian Huskies with Alaskan Malamutes, which look very similar (almost identical unless you are used to seeing them!), but Mals are about twice the size.  Double a male Siberian's weight, and a 55 lbs. dog which is normal for the Sibe, becomes a "normal" Alaskan Malamute at 110 lbs.

Of course, not everyone breeds to the standards, so there is a chance that selective breeding has produced a larger breed, but in no way is this normal or to be thought as a purebred standard Siberian Husky.  My guess would be the father is a Malamute or a mix of some sort.
