Getting an older huskie

Question
We currently have a female 4 year old malamute and thinking of bringing home an 18 month old male huskie.

I have brought up the female ever since she was just 10 weeks old. Do you have any advice on how to bring up a dog that's already 18 months old? Is it too late to crate train him? Do I treat him like he's a puppy?

Answer
Dear Bernie,
A malamute and a Husky are a good pairing of breeds to have. Both have similar needs and requirements. It is hard to advise you on just how to treat the new dog not knowing what background it came from. You will just have to watch the interaction closely. You can always ask me things as they come up.
As for crate training you may have left it too late but some dogs will still learn it. Make the crate a special place, give treats in there, at first do not leave her in there too long and make sure to start with you tire her out first, and pick a time the house will be quiet so she gets the idea it is be still time.
I hope this helps.
