9 week old female Husky

Question
Hi, I just got a female husky/shepherd mix. She's a doll, but at night she pouts and pouts! I NEVER GET TO SLEEP. I expected it to be rough, but no joke it's every other hour with her. She's in a crate and sometimes I've tried to ignore her knowing she just wants attention or most of the time she just wants out. But if I ignore her, I usually find that she's gone to the bathroom in the crate I know she'd much rather sleep on the floor, but when I do that she sleeps for awhile then poops on the floor during the night. So I've tried to just keep her in the crate. She also doesn't like to sit still in someone lap unless she's very tiered. And even then she would rather lay on the floor. Should I fight the urge to want to hold her or is this a normal stage of puppy hood?

Answer
Seems pretty normal for a Siberian pup.  Keep in mind that a puppy shouldn't be expected to stay inside without going to the bathroom any more than one hour more than the number of months she is old (8 week old puppy is 2 months old, therefore she should be able to stay inside for at most 3 hours without going, 5 month old = 6 hours).  Make sure the crate is small enough that she only has room to lay down and that's about it, that should also help keep her from going in the crate.  In any case, you will be getting up at least twice a night, probably three or four times, to take the pup outside for the first few weeks.

Sibes aren't lap dogs, so not surprising she doesn't want to be in your lap - Sibes are very independent dogs and that usually starts from puppyhood.  Just make sure that if she whines in her crate, you make sure she has gone out, and then ignore it.  It's tough, but it works eventually.  Also, keep in mind that dogs need to go to the bathroom usually:

1) Just after waking
2) Just after playing
3) Just after eating (usually about 10 minutes or so)

That should help.  And sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I just got the email this morning that I had a question waiting for me.  Oops!
