introduction of 8 mo old husky pup into a two cat household

Question
We "rescued" an 8 mo. old male husky through a friend.  We are pleased with him, however, my 8 year old male cat and two year old female cat are not.  They are terrified, in fact.  The dog has taken over the upper level of our house and the cats have been displaced to the lower level.  Any suggestions?  Will they all be friends someday?  I miss my kitties and feel terrible for bringing in the big bad dog.

Answer
Unfortunately you are in a tough situation.  Siberian Huskies can be very dangerous to cats actually, not out of malice, but they have a high prey drive and cats have a habit of acting in manners that excite that.  The best hope of success is either complete isolation or controlled and supervised interactions.  In any case, the cats should not be left alone with the husky at all.  The Siberian is young enough at 8 months to maybe learn to live with cats, but even young pups with proper socialization sometimes fail to recognize cats as fellow packmates.  This is a tough situation and sometimes isolation and separation is the only course of action.
