Question
I have a 5 months old puppy (husky) and I would like to know how old he should be before I get him to breed.

Answer
You should NEVER breed a dog before you get them health tested. Eyes should be done at 1 year (juvenile cataracts show up from 6 months to a year normalcy, sometimes between 1 and 2 but that rarely happens) Hips can be OFAed after 1 year (preliminaries certified tests are after 2). The health tests are for your safety (financially) even if you have no contract or genetic health agreement anyone who buys a pup from you can come back and sue you if any ailment effects there quality of life. This is because to the government the puppy is a good and any defected good should have a replacement or a refund. Also no good breeder will even look at your dog twice if you do not have the health tests done, I know I wouldn't.
In short do not breed until AFTER you get the health tests done. usually 1 to 2 years.
Also out of curiosity, why do you want to breed? What can this male offer the the breed that is a benefit? You don't make money breeding (I know I make my money sledding) and a stud will make you nothing if you don't pour money into that dog and show it first. How your dog does in the show determines his stud price you can ask. Also the price you can fairly ask for his puppies.
If you asking about maturity, It varies greatly when they will breed. My Grand Champion male who was the #6 sibe wasn't ready to breed until he was nearly 2 years old. My friend breeds lines mixed with Racing lines, he was ready at 7 months (she caught him trying to tie with his sister) but she was responsible and got his teats done and DNAed him first. -Michelle B
