Question
My boyfriend and I just got a beautiful Alaskan Husky.  She has taken to me very well, however, she seems to be afraid of my boyfriend.  He has done everything to be nice to her.  He talks in a lower voice and puts his hand in front of her face, as not to scare her.  Sometimes when he goes to pat her, she will back away slowly, even into a corner.  I am unsure what to do.  She is a gorgeous dog and I want her to be comfortable in the house with everyone around, not just me.  Any ideas?

Answer
First, treats are a good tool here to get dogs to like other people.  It's one of a few instances I actually encourage the use of treats for training.  :)  Also, make sure that your boyfriend is getting down at or below her eye level - squatting down really does help.  And also, a lot of people present a hand from above to a dog and this is actually a somewhat dominant gesture.  Presenting a hand from underneath, palm up, and moving slowly under the chin and to the snout of a dog is more submissive and less confrontational way of getting to meet a dog.  Finally, the more training you and your boyfriend can do with the dog, the better.  Get started in obedience classes and training now if you haven't started yet, and make sure he is involved as well.  This will help build those bonds between them.

Oh, and also general socialization will help the dog feel more comfortable with other people as well, so get out there.  :)
