Husky diet

Question
Faye, thank you for being available to answer questions about my boy! He is a 5-month old Sibe named Nanuk. He has jsut received the last of his vaccinations and I haven't had any problems w/ him other than loose stool. After getting rid of his round worms his stool wasn't the consistency it should have been. With one more visit to the vet, she suggested giving him 5 days worth of Flagyl to take care of any inflamation that may have been left over from the worms and temporarily changing his diet to chicken & rice. (I had previously been feeding him Iams puppy.) This helped the stool, but it doesn't look like he's going to be able to go back to Iams or any other processed dry dog food. I am willing to do whatever it is he needs to get the proper nutrition! Would you tell me specifically what foods (raw or cooked) I can safely give him and experiment w/ to ensure he has a well-balanced, nutritious diet? And also what amount of each? For now and into adulthood?
Also, we live in Richmond, VA. Are you aware of any sled clubs or "vacation" spots for Huskies in the U.S.? I would love to be able to take him somewhere during the winter months to participate in activities w/ other Huskies, or dogs in general! Thanks soooo much!

Answer
Dear Tanya,
Ah the diet question, well I must say you have witnessed the benifits of fresh raw food first hand. The rule is all the diet must be raw, and I feed no commercial dog food at all and I have 4 huge thriving boys the oldest is almost 10 he only looks 5! I go to the vets and they are amazed at the health of my guys every time. I attribute it to the diet I feed and the vast amount of excercise I give my guys.
I only ever feed my guys once a day, huskies can be very ruled by food.
But beware huskies were specifically designed to subsist in a very harsh
environment on very little food and work all day on it. So they can become
very overweight in the absence of this. Here are some feeding hints these
are the rules I live by and I have had great success with.
This is a question I am often asked and I have only one answer, though
most people rarely follow my advice. I only feed raw food to my dogs I do
not give them any commercial dog food at all. I must say my guys thrive on
this diet, and are healthier, and happier then dogs who eat processed
food. I give all raw meat, all differnt kinds, but for growing pups
chicken is the best. I give whole eggs shell and all, lactose reduced milk, basically everything I would eat with the exception of cereals, even fruit and veg.Beleive it or not, although dog food is full of the stuff, dogs cannot
digest it at all, and it has no food value to them at all. So forget the rice entirely.Cereals can even cause diabeties which I have seen happen first hand in dogs, and often does. So give a diet of 80% raw meaty bones and don't have a vet bill or a broken heart.
If you have any further questions dont hesitate to ask. The best place to look for sledding clubs is online. Many are listed. I am new to the US so that is where I started to look as well. I am sure you will turn up something that way.
I hope this helps you, Faye and Husky Crew.
