huskey coloration

Question
I know someone who purchased a sable Siberian husky that was two years old. The dog is sable, brownish red with black highlights. After a shed the dog is now gray. The woman was told, when the dog gets her full coat back, she will again be sable. The parents of that dog are sable and agouti. Can you explain this?
Thank you, Debbie

Answer
When the Siberian sheds it sheds one layer of coat (under coat then top coat) at a time. The Guard hairs contain the darker grey pigment and the undercoat contains, the red, tan pigment. The sable color will only be at its full glory just before the shed again. During the summer the caot will be lighter because the hair is shorter, this means each strand of fur supports less color. The Siberians coat is always in full glory in the winter time when they have the thickest and fullest coat.

Hope this helps, if not ask me to clarify!
