Husky chewing

Question
I have a 1 1/2 year old female husky that chews EVERYTHING!
We have had her for 6 months now and can not figure out how
to stop the constant chewing of things.  She will seriously chew
anything that she can find (shoes, couches, sprinkler heads, my
daugter's toys...anything), and totally destroy it. We have tried
getting her ropes, kongs, tire toys, and multiple other toys to
keep her busy and chewing on appropriate things, but she will
simply tear it up and move on, or not be interested in it.  PLEASE
help!

Answer
Unfortunately, there is no easy solution to this problem, but several little things that can help.  At 18 months, the dog is not teething, so this is a behavioral problem - not a developmental one.  The good news is that behaviors can be relearned.

First, remember that a tired husky is a good husky . . . chewing is often as much done from boredom as anything else - so try to get her to burn off some extra energy as much as possible.  Dogs also do better as a whole with a solid obedience training background - so if you haven't trained her on simple commands (sit, down, stay, heel), get working on it.  If you have gone through training, keep it up or get back to it.  You may have to get slightly physical with her to get her to learn that chewing on certain things are unacceptable.  By physical, a stern "LEAVE IT!" and a grab on the neck is usually sufficient.  If that doesn't work, there are some other methods as well.

You are doing the right thing in trying to replace chewed items with appropriate things.  One thing we did when ours were teething that might help at least get her more interested in the right things to chew is butter spray.  The little pump bottles of like I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray seemed to be a good taste . . . a few squirts on it and Mika and Shadow were much more interested in the chew toy.  You may also want to try one of the Kongs filled with the Kong spray and or a treat.  If your dog is one of those determined chewers, this will give her something to work for (and you might want to try the "heavy-duty" one if she's destroyed them.

The only other thing I can think of that might help is look for a chewing spray.  There is a spray that we used (I believe Nature's Miracle makes it, but I can't remember) and it was basically a really bad sour apple flavor.  Anyway, you spritz that on objects that the dog is chewing on that are inappropriate.  A few tastes around the house, and the dogs quickly learned that chewing those things was a bad thing.  And ignore the foaming at the mouth that seems to follow . . . both of our dogs refused to swallow for about 15 minutes after and would just walk around with their tongues about half out of their mouth; and Mika used to drag her tongue around on the carpet to try to get the taste out.  So hopefully, that will help protect permanent fixtures.  Additionally, we still lose shoes now and then if we don't put them up - so of course make sure you've done as much "puppy-proofing" as possible.

Hope that helps, and if you have any further questions, please feel free to get back with me.
