Hypothyroidism

Question
My aunt has a dog that may have hypothyroidism. He is a american bulldog that is now blind. He has mucus in his eyes that they said they could have surgery, but it would later come back. He is losing hair, gaining weight, and is very lethargic. They feed him Iams, I told them Purina ONE beyond would probably be better as it has no corn or wheat and doesn't have any by-products. She said he started drinking more before he went blind. Now I am wondering about diabetes. If he should have diabetes what should they do for that? I have read licorice root would be good for hypothyroidism, but that it can be poisonous. What would be best for his diet? Should they make his food? And would colloidal silver help him in any way? He also has joint issues. It hurts him to get up off the floor. Any herbs that would help with diabetes, joint issues, hypothyroidism would be helpful. Thanks!!!

Answer
Hello Elizabeth,

Putting your aunt's dog on a pre-paired, frozen raw food diet such as Northwest Naturals, Steves Real Food, or any number of others currently available would probably clear up the majority of his problems. At the very least, get him on a quality brand of a GRIN FREE dry food such as Sun Dancer from Solid Gold, or one of the other quality grain free formulas from a local pet store, plus add a quality ENZYME and PROBIOTIC supplement such as "iflora" from HerbSmith.

The raw diet would be the best, but the other alternative will give him a lot of relief as well.
The GRAIN FREE factor is very important.

I would highly recommend that you buy your aunt a copy of my book, "Simple Steps to a Healthy Pet" because it will give her a lot of information that she desperately needs to know at this point. Information that will save her a lot of money in vet bills. You can find it on my site http://naturalsforanimals.com along with several helpful articles and products.

Most of the issues you mentioned would be alleviated without supplementation by the diet change, but HerbSmith is a great source for herbal supplements and the vet who owns the company is wonderful and very helpful, as is her staff. If you would like to contact me by phone, I would be happy to talk to you. My number in the evening after 6pm Eastern time is 727-327-8769.
