Question
I was just reading a response to a question on UTI's in
cats, and one woman said a natural remedy is garlic powder?
However when I was looking on the ASPCA's website, it said
Garlic was toxic to cats?

Answer
Hi Alexandra, Good Question about garlic and cats!
Yes, garlic needs to be used in minimal amounts for cats/ AND short term, too.  Cat's are more prone to anemia problems from the usage of Garlic.  The garlic builds up over time and can cause trouble with the RED Blood cells.
So, Yes, garlic in very small amounts for a very Short term is fine.

As for dogs - They do much better with garlic but still It can cause troubles with RBC and canines.
So, the key is Moderation and use Garlic on Health Dogs only - Dogs who have No major medical problems can utilize Garlic well.

I do thank you for your Question!
Good Job warning us about garlic..
AGAIN, I use it in small amounts on many of my pets ....

Here is some info from the NET:

Garlic and onion belong to the plant species Allium.
Garlic has been used by humans as a food flavoring, blood purifier, antibiotic, and antiparasitic drug.

Both garlic and onion can be toxic to dogs, cats, and other animals. Cats appear to be more sensitive than dogs. In dogs and cats, onions and garlic can cause a breakdown of the red blood cells, resulting in Heinz body anemia. The bulbs, bulbets, flowers, and stems of the garlic and onion can all be toxic. There are some human baby foods that have onion in them, and it is not recommended to feed them to pets.
The very small amounts of garlic that are present in some commercial pet foods have not been shown to cause any problems.
