essential oil flea/tick repellant

You mention not to use geranium or pennyroyal essential oil around cats. Please explain further. We have both dogs and cats, and are looking for effective flea treatment for all. I've been doing quite a bit of web research; the info on pennyroyal's toxicity is sobering, to say the least. Knowing a safe concentration would be great. I contacted the pennyroyal oil's distributor, but they, reluctant to be accountable perhaps, advised, "Try some internet searches and contact your local stores that carry oils."

So, thanks for any specifics you can add to this search.
