Question

spag rash
Hello,

I have a 2 yr old shar-pei (spaghetti is her name), we found her abandoned in our park and we've had her for 7 months now. She recently developed a rash that looks like shes been burned  near her genitals. I thought maybe it was a food allergy and saw that the food she had been eating (pedigree) had corn, wheat, soy and other things that she could be allergic to. So i switched her to eukenuba ( venison & potatoes) . She still has the rash that she licks a lot and i think that makes it worse. She also has pimple like bumps around her body some of them look like warts too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!

Answer
Honestly the bumps look like flea bites.

As for allergies, you have to first determine if it's environmental or food related. Is it worse when she changes locations? The food you are feeding has tons of ingredients so you need to keep it simple.

I always recommend a raw diet, especially for possible allergies. Feed just one kind of protein raw for a couple weeks and see how it goes. Most people choose chicken first. She could eat a chicken leg quarter easily. Make sure she doesn't gulp it. Some dogs new to raw feeding will do that. If she's a gulper hold onto one end of the quarter and let her chew the other end. Once it's no longer a novelty she will slow down.

If things go well after two weeks try switching proteins to beef or pork. Then add proteins one at a time every week or so and stop any that cause a reaction.

If she doesn't do well on chicken switch to only beef or chicken and keep track of her reactions. It's so much easier to figure out one ingredient at a time and won't hurt her for a short while.

If you get no change from the diet experiments it's environmental and not her food.

Write me back and let me know what happens so I can lead you through all this.
