Question

Fluffers
I bought a Columbian Red Tailed Boa on July 3rd of 2008, and he is doing wonderfully,he sheds often and is very friendly, he also eats well which brings me to my question.
he is about 30in. long ( well that was the size of his last shed) and he eats 2 mice every about 2 weeks. and me and my husband thought that maybe instead of feeding him 2 mice he could eat 1 baby rat....but when we asked the pet store owner about it he gave us a lecture ...saying that he shouldn't even be eating 2 mice cause he is too young.... by the way he is about 7 months old......i feel like i cant get it right ..... he seems very content with the 2 mice...are we over feeding him like the petstore owner says.....if so what should he be eating?
here is a pic of him so you have a good idea of his size...

Answer
Hey Jody,

He is pretty big. A good rule of thumb is to feed him a prey item that is equal to the mid body girth of the snake. I would suggest that you feed him every seven days. You can probably feed him a small rat. that often. I will tell you that some snakes get so used to mice that they do not want to have anything to do with a rat. Then again some take to them like there is no difference.

The problem is that pet stores tend to just sell the animals and do not know everything about them. This is not to say that they are all this way, but a good majority are.

The girth of your snake will tell you how big the prey item can be.
Never feed a prey items bigger than this, it could kill your snake.

Hope this helps,
Eric
