My Corn Snake has not ate for 45 days

Question
Hi, I have a male Corn Snake that is a Florida species and is about 4 years old. At least this is what the local pet store owner has told me. Some kids found him in a residential neighborhood and brought him into the police station that I work at during the spring time (I live in Massachusetts so the snake is not a native one).  I have had him since then and I am feeding him 2 large mice(Not live) every week. He definitely gained weight and has grown since I adopted him.  It is now January 20 and he has not eaten for approximately 45 days.  He likes to stay coiled up under his hollow log and at night he roams the tank for a while. He is in a 20 gallon long tank with the proper mulch that the pet store sells for snakes. He has a water bowl and I put his larger water bowl in his tank on occasions but he very rarely goes in it so I put him in a plastic tub of warm water for 20 minutes a week. Any suggestions on why his isn't feeding?

Answer
Hi Wayne,
First off, thanks for rescuing the snake. I get a lot of questions this time of year about snakes not eating. The short answer is this: Snakes act weird in winter. I have everything from pythons to paradise island tree snakes and they all do weird stuff in winter. Since your snake has been eating well, then do not be too concerned if he doesn't eat for another couple of months. I have a Macklot's python that eats about 6 months out of the year; no kidding. He goes all winter without eating and this is normal for him. He eats like a pig during summer. If he goes more than 90 days without eating, best take him to the vet to rule out an illnesses, but I would just keep doing what your doing. You might stimulate his appetite by offering live, or maybe a hamster. Short of that, just keep offering and leave the F/T mouse in the enclosure for 24 hours. I believe that he will eat eventually.
