Question
QUESTION: I just got my snake today and it was born on a farm. I noticed 2 bumps on its body that are fairly close together. After checking further I found another one closer to the tail, on the tail and it kind of feels like maybe on the vent as well. Im not sure but they resemble bites. I was trying to see if maybe they were ticks but Im not even sure what that would like. How can I tell?

ANSWER: Hi Rebecca. I would actually need to see a picture of these bumps. Do they look as though they are under the skin or on the surface of the skin? If they are under the skin it could be a small cyst or even swelling from an insect bite. If it is on the surface and has a different coloring to it it could be a tick.  As you know..they start out small and can be greyish/tanish in color. Eventually they get engorged with blood and swell up.

QUESTION: Thank you for replying. They appear to be healing bites. Probably from feeding with live mice.  I do have another question though, we are at our wits end! We now have three baby red-tails and all of them are regurging their food. We have lost two others because they would do that and end up with an empty stomach. I couldn't even get those to eat even though I tried various methods. I even brained one fuzzy.I don't know what to do. The humidity level is kept at moderate and the temp varies between 80-90 during the day and 75-80 at night. We have heating pads on one side under all of the enclosures for them and a water dish on the other side that is kept a little cooler. All three of the baby's we have were purchased from different places and they are all kept in separate enclosures. We wash our hands thoroughly before handling any of them. Please advise.

Answer
Hi Rebecca
Glad to hear the bumps have healed up.
Regarding your boas regurgitating their food....you are doing everything possible to keep them happy and healthy.  Keep the humidity at 50-60% at all times and the hot side about 92 and ambient is about 82-84. Also, wait at least 10 days before you offer them food again. They will not die in that amount of time. If you do it too soon it will most likely happen again. It is best to take new snakes to a Vet to be checked out for internal parasites.  They can pick parasites up from the breeder and that in turn can lead to feeding problems. Good luck and let me know how that works out.
