Lighting/Heating for Ball Python

Question
I have a 29 gallon aquarium, what is the best light/heating set up for a ball python.  The more specific (brand, watts, ect) the better.  I have never owned a snake before, so I want to have everything I need before purchasing one.

Answer
Heating for a snake is pretty simple. The most important thing you will want is a temperature gradient. One end will be about 80-82 degrees and the other in the lower 70's. This will be easy to establish with a 29 gallon.

Best way to get the right heat is a combo of an undertank heater and a heat lamp.
This is an undertank heater made by Zoo-Med. These are what I use. They come in 4 different sizes, and the size recommended will be on the package. This will be put under one side of the tank. They will adhere to the bottom of the tank. Just make sure that you use the little plastic feet they give you in the package to keep it of the surface it will be sitting on as they can damage wood and plastic.

For the heat lamp you will have 3 different options. These are:
-a red-heat lamp
-ceramic heat lamp
- regular heat lamp

A red heat lamp is this:

You probably will need a 75w for the tank, but as I don't know what size python you will be getting, this can vary. For a 3 foot ball python, I use a 100w. But for the 2 foot I use a 75. This uses infrared heat and gives off a red glow. Your snake can't see this however! So it makes it easy for you to leave it on all the time without the snake not getting enough sleep.

The ceramic heater is this:

Emits no light and can last up to 5 years. Also another good option. 75-100w depending on size.

Regular heat lamp is this:

These emit light and are the most common of the heat lamps. You will have to turn this off at night so they get get some sleep. 75-100w depending on the size of the snake.

These will both be on the same side of the tank so the snake can thermo-regulate.
