hi i want to bred my 2 year old corn snake, i dont know if its a male or not but  i will get it sexed then get another of the oppisite, but i ewas reading up on breding and hibernating always comes up. why do they have t ohibernate firts, or do they even HAVE to hibernate first and how does it help them. is it possible to not hibernate first wil they dtill habve babies

Answer
Most colubrid snakes (kingsnake and milksnakes) often need a hibernation cycle to breed. It is actually called brumation, because they don't "sleep" during this cycle. However, since they aren't actively eating and digesting food, their bodies go through the process of developing sperm and eggs. When they come out of brumation, it simulates Spring to them and they mate. Corn snakes, even though they are also colubrids, often do not require the brumation period to breed. Some people think that just them seeing the normal season cycle of shortened days is enough to tell their body clocks when it's time to breed. So to answer your question, you may not have to brumate your corns in order to get them to breed, but it wouldn't hurt if you did.
