Question
QUESTION: i was wondering what is the best substrate for a whites frog. I hear that coconut or cork bark or something is good because its edible. i want to know your opinion... thx

ANSWER: Hi Conor
I have always wanted to keep these frogs but I have never gotten around to setting up a tank of them
Maybe next year
:)
Anyway-Because of my interest in these endearing creatures-I did a lot of web browsing on care sheets for them and i found 3 answers to the substrate question
1 water-a shallow amount with a rock and some fake plants to climb on with no other substrate used
2 coconut fiber(bed-a beast etc) and moss
3 Paper towels

For the most natural looking I would go with the coconut fiber and the New Zealand Sphagnum Moss

For the easist to clean-paper towels would work best and you could still lay moss over them

If you are interested in moss here is the type that i like the best
Here is the ebay sellers link where I bought a large package for around $20 shipped

http://cgi.ebay.com/Sphagnum-Moss-1-4-LB-New-Zealand-Grade-AAA-Best-Quality_W0QQ

If that link does not work here is the ebay  item number
360082360444
This auction is for 1/4 lb and it is very compressed so that will go a long way
I am sure that if the auction is over by the time that you read this that they have many more packages of this moss available

From what I have read on substrate for these guys-do not use anything that they can not ingest safely-which it sounds like you already know

Good Luck with your frog(s)

QUESTION: thanks for awnsering my question you gave alot of detail.. I have two more questions. One how often do you clean the tank and what is the whole process like the cleaning white frog tank 101 sorta thing. And my parents were wondering if it will make any noise at night....thx

Answer
You are very welcome
:)
If you use paper towels-you simply pull put the old and wipe down the glass bottom
Do not use soap or any other cleaner unless you can completely rinse out the tank so that here is no residue remaining

If you use the coconut fiber-then it becomes more involved with taking all of that out and wiping down the bottom of the tank and  and replacing with new fiber

I am not sure how long that you can go in between cleaning the coconut fiber but as with any particle substrate-bacteria can be present in it from the feces and I would say that the more often that the substrate is cleaned-the better

Moss should be regularly replaced as well

I would browse the web and join a frog forum and read what other Whites' keepers husbandry practices are to get a better idea of how often to clean when using the coconut fiber

As for vocalizing or calling-males will call at night after becoming sexually mature and I believe that females are much quieter-vocalizing only to answer a males call

I hope that his has helped and Good luck with your frog
