breading male bearded dragons

Question

Super Orange/ Chris Al
I am thinking about breeding bearded dragons. I and not a kid and have done lots of research and bought an amazing Super orange morph male from a private owner.  When I got him home I put him in with two normal females which he bred with in a day.  He continued to breed for a week then I took him the females out.  My question is this?  During that week I NEVER saw him eat.  It has been over 2 weeks since I took out the females and all he will eat is one or two super worms every day or so nothing else! No crickets, vegtables, rep cal nothing at all.  He does not appear sick all he wants to do is sit on his basking spot he doesn't even walk around. His owners told me they never brummated him.  Should I put a female back in with him?

I am concerned.

thanks Kate

Answer
Hi Kate, That is a very nice looking male that you have  and he certainly looks like he is in full breeding mode.  Change of environment will cause an appetite reduction but in your case I suspect it is entirely hormone related. Male reptiles will often get so preoccupied during breeding time that their appetite for food practically disappears. My male corn snakes will completely ignore their mice in the spring time when their breeding season arrives. I suspect that as that black beard and his hormones subside his appetite will return. Brumation should affect his fertility level so theoretically you could put the female back in ensure a good fertility and hatch rate on your eggs. I never actively brumated my beardeds or my snakes when I was breeding them and always had good production and a very high hatch rate.
