QuestionThis year and last year I have found one light blue/green egg buried in a planter around my house. Last year I thought it was leftover Easter egg, but now I'm wondering if they might be reptile eggs. From reading other posts, I'm afraid I probably handled it too much for it to have survived. In Buffalo in early October, is it likely to be a viable egg? Is it worthwhile to rebury it? Do you have any idea what sort of animal it might be? It's not leathery but maybe a bit softer in feel than a chicken egg.
Answer All reptile eggs are shades of white that I know of...and I even asked asked around to other experienced herpers I could reach to verify this. There are birds that lay blue to green eggs, like robins, flycatchers and a species of hen called aracunas. However, reptile eggs laid white and buried in certain soils can take on colorations from the minerals in those soils with time.
