Question
I got a guinea pig from a petco store about 3-4 weeks ago.  She seemed very radally in her throat and her eye looked smaller that the other one. We gave her soma amoxcicillian and some eye treatment or however you spell that that wouldnt harm her!  After 4 days she was totally fine and then the next morning she passed away!  :(  It was reallly weird!  She was only 3 monthes when I got her, maybe from the begining she wasnt well?  Do you think that she just had a birth defect/  I have had guinea pigs in the past so I know how to take care of them! Tahnkyou! :)

Answer
Hi Cristie,

Amoxicillin (Clavamox) is toxic to guineas. That is most likely what caused her death. I'm sorry you lost her in such a way; it would be a good idea to revise all the latest guinea pig medical information at the website linked below so you are better prepared should you choose to adopt any more piggies. Most medications should only be given under the supervision of a vet so I advise you bear this in mind also.
See www.guinealynx.info for more information on safe and dangerous medications.

Best Wishes,

- Laura
