Question
Hello!!
I just bought a guinea pig last week, and today I noticed a spot between his eye and nose with some hair missing. It appears to be a mole or some sort of build-up. Is this a parasite, or do guinea's commonly have moles? Also, I let him run around in the hallway. He appeared to enjoy it a few days ago but lately he scratches at the carpet under my door or will jump up against it violently. Is he trying to get back in his cage in my room or get away from me? Or just curious maybe? Thanks!

Answer
Hi Sara,

As you purchased your guinea, I wouldn't be surprised if he is ill. Pet stores and some breeders are notorious for selling ill, pregnant or mis-sexed piggies.

It sounds as though he could have a skin problem. Throwing himself against the door could be one of two things - either popcorning because he is so happy, or trying to relieve intense skin irritation. It's hard to tell without seeing him.

The best thing to do is take him to a vet. It's difficult to make a diagnosis without seeing him; at least with a vet you have a professional who can check over, diganose and treat the problem.
