QUESTION: Please help
my guinea pig has only three working legs. What should i do? Do i have to do anything special. Just so you know she can walk ok but she is always limping i really need help
Jennifer

ANSWER: You don't say why she has only three working legs. Was this a birth defect, or perhaps an injury that left her this way?

Animals don't have the capacity to feel sorry for themselves. They don't have a 'pity' gene that makes them think they are unable to continue a normal life. I have a sow that was born with a twisted foot. The pad of the foot touches the inside of the leg, causing her to walk on the top of the foot. She is a normal, healthy, vibrant little pig who has always gotten around just fine. She too limps just a bit, but it doesn't stop her from doing whatever she wants to do.

You don't need to do anything special for your pig. She will find a way to make life happen. She will not view this as a disability, but as an adjustment.

QUESTION: hello and thank you for the answer
i bought her from the pet shop 2 weeks ago. i do have some experience with guinea pigs because i have 7 others. I realy dont know if it is a birth deformaty because when i bought her i did not even realise that she had it. I only found out when i took her to my friends house and she was running across the lawn.
thank you.

Answer
Thank you for the input. Since this is not a new injury it's probably already healed into the position into which it will stay. There's a chance maybe she got run over by larger pigs while in transport, and it could have caused some nerve damage. But that really doesn't change anything.  She will adjust to her needs and get along just fine. She will grow up not knowing or caring that she's any different from the others.
