My guinea pig constantly begs for food

Question
Hello-

I own a guinea pig who is constantly begging for food. I always feed her in
the morning for breakfast and in the evening for dinner. However, she has
gotten used to the fact that whenever she hears the fridge open, that
automatically means she can beg for food. When someone enters the room,
she begs for food. Overall, we have to feed her about 5-6 times a day. It is
very hard to ignore her calls because she usually squeals louder if you ignore
her. Besides, she is just too cute to resist!

I've sometimes wondered if her constant begging is because she is bored and
has nothing else to do but eat. After all, she doesn't have anyone to play with.
I've tried holding her but she doesn't let me touch her unless I distract her
with food. Once she is eating, I can grab her. However, when she is done, she
starts complaining and tries to get out of my lap.

What can I do to entertain her? How do I get her to let me hold her? I try to
play with her everyday and I constantly give her floor time but she is
uncooperative. And how do I get her to not beg for food all the time? It's not
really such a big deal to me because I find it kinda cute, but it can get
annoying every once in a while.

Thank you for reading. I look forward to your answer.

Answer
Hi
you will never stop her begging for food, part from sleeping and pooping it is a guinea pigs favourite pastime.
They always squeal when the fridge door opens - mine do and when theres 3 of them the noise is deafening.Try getting the shopping into the cupboards without rustling a carrier bag :)
You can leave a whole small raw carrot in her pen so it takes her a while to get gnawing.Perhaps you can push one through the wire in her hutch or her pen.
Hide her favourite food in small bits underneath sheets of newspaper around her play area so she has to forage.
Use the inside of an empty loo roll and stuff it with hay or fresh grass so she can amuse herself getting the hay out.
Try not to give in to her when she begs for food, and use her fave food as a treat when she stays on your lap for a cuddle.
Some piggies just dont like being handled till they are a lot older.
