Question
I's me from earlier.  To answer your question, I think that she might be pregnant because the guy at the pet store didn't know how to tell a male from a female and they were in the cage together.  Also, she is very fat!  2 large lumps on either side of her lower abdomen.  She was healthy and playful at the store.  Maybe she just missed her old roomies?  I'm just concerned because 2 weeks ago we rescued an old guinea pig, and I treated him the best I could, but he didn't make it, so I bleached everything VERY good and let it sit a coupole of days before replacing him (for my son).  Anyways, today she doesn't seem to be eating or drinking, but she could just be hiding when we are around.  I couldn't find a breeder when I was looking so that's why I went to a pet store.  Also, there IS NOT a good vet for pigs here.  I took our last one and he gave our pig penicillin.  I found out after he had been on it 3 days that he shouldn't be on penicillin.  HELP!

Answer
Chris -

First, let me apologise for the extreme delay in my response.  I have been seriously ill for over a week now and have been unable to respond to any of my email.  I just wanted you to know I was not deliberately ignoring you.

Well, she may be pregnant.  If you only have one option for a vet, then I would definitely say to avoid this guy, unless you absolutely have to.  If you do have to go, there is a list of dangerous medicines for guinea pigs that you can print out and take with you posted at www.guinealynx.info/dangerous_medications.html

I would say to just avoid startling her for a month or two (if she is showing that much, it will give her time to deliver her babies).  You also want to avoid handling her as much as possible.  Make sure she is getting plenty of vitamin c and wait.  Guinea pigs have this knack for having babies in the middle of the night or while you are not at home.

Hope this is helpful.  If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me again, as I am better now and should be able to answer much more quickly.  Thanks!
