Question on whelping

Question
Thank you so much for your answer.  Today is day 61 and this morning her temp was 86.8 then a couple of hours later 86.6.  She has not come out of her whelping box, at least not until I made myself lunch. She ate all of my sandwich (liverwurst) and we sat outside for a while.  I took her temp when we came back in and now it's 99.6.  She's now back to following me everywhere I go.  She's lying down and I'm waiting for about 15 minutes and then I'll take her temp again.

This is her 2nd litter.  The last time her temp dropped to 86 at noon on day 61 and she whelped at 11:30am on day 62.  I offered her chicken an hour before she whelped and she ate it, but then promptly vomited it up again.  She had 8 puppies, one was stillborn (very small compared to the rest).  This time the x-ray shows 7 again, only it seems like she's alot bigger and more uncomfortable.  Maybe I just don't remember.  Last time was 18 mos ago.  This waiting is making me insane though.

Are 2nd pregnancies and 2nd whelping much the same as the first in dogs or are they like people?

Answer
Each female is different. Sometimes X-rays can be deceiving, depending on the tech, it may only show one horn or pups could be hiding.   I had x-rays done and was told 6 pups -- when the female whelped she had 11.

The waiting is always hardest on the people.... and it's true every whelp is different.   Just hang on, make yourself (and your female) a bowl of vanilla ice cream and enjoy each others company!

Good luck.
