Question
My female pug had her first puppy February 23 at 11:00 am. She had 5 more puppies, with no problems, the last one being born at 6:40 pm. It is now 16 hours from her last puppy and she is still panting but not pushing. This is her second litter. Her first litter she had 4 puppies and no problems. Is this normal or is it because she still has a puppy inside her?

Answer
Hi Barb.  Your new mother might be suffering from a medical condition known as Hypocalcemia, which is a dangerously low level of calcium. When calcium is used faster than it is replaced - such as in the production of milk- hypocalcemia results. Hypocalcemia usually occurs after giving birth to a large litter.

Signs that your dog might be suffering from low calcium levels can include restlessness, muscle tremors, increased respiratory rate (which would account for the panting your pug is exhibiting), temperature greater than 103.5 and convulsions.

If you feel that your Pug might be suffering from Hypocalcemia, it is important that you seek medical treatment immediately.  Your vet can administer a intravenous treatment of calcium and sodium bicarbonate, if needed.

Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.

Sincerely,
