3 week old mini dachshund pups have very runny & smelly stools - is this normal?

Question
Hi, we have 8 mini doxie pups just gone 3 weeks and their stools are a fairly runny, yellowish smelly consistency, sometimes with some small whitish chunks in them. They have only been feeding from the mother, I haven't given them any other milk / food / water - so I am worried that if this is not normal, perhaps it is something the mother is eating that is causing this. We give the mother chicken necks, good quality dry puppy food, water and full cream milk. Should I be supplementing the pups diet with water or puppy formula? Is the mother not supposed to drink full cream cows milk? Or is this type of stool normal for this age pup?

Answer
Have you dewormed them? Should've at two weeks. But this sounds like coccidia to me.If it has a metallic odor then that's what your'e dealing with> They need albon and metronidazole. Either call your vet , or if he needs you to run the pups in for a fecal. He'll give you the albon and a prescription for metronidazole (Flagyl). They'll need to be on it for ten days. Then treated again afterwards.over 90percent of all dogs in the US have coccidia now. Nasty stuff.
Good luck, Oh and I would not give your dog milk of any kind. That's not your problem with the pups but it is not good for them. The pups should be starting soft food now but wait until you get this cleared up to start them. And definitely they should have water available
