Mating my 3 1/2 yr old Shih Tzu

Question
My male Shih Tzu will not mount the female who appears to be ready and very very inviting.  He is very aggressive, dancing around her..barks...talks...moans...groans..strokes her, quivers uncontrollably, but does not mount her.  Is it possible that he doesn't know what to do?

Answer
It may just be that they are only at the courting stage.  They usually spend some time getting to know each other and this is normal behavior.  What day of the cycle is the female on?  Is she flagging?  Is she putting her rump up in the air and backing up to the male?  If she is in anyway, snarling or still just not quite ready your male knows this and will not mount her until just the right time and trust me he will mount her when he's ready and he knows that she is prime.  Now, if this is his first time he may then indeed need a little help and you don't want to miss the breeding so, if the female is READY according to the above questions then you have 2 choices #1 is to A.I. her and #2 is to get ready to get physical (you will have to hold her) and help the little man get lined up and hold him in place until he gets the swing of things (so to say) usually once he sees how things works and that it's ok then he should be fine and be good to go and make a tie on his own.  If not then (well, I hope you have a vet to do an A.I. or you know how)  Good luck and hope this all helped some.
