Question

Sophie
Hi Marie,

I have a 13wk old female shih tzu(Sophie)who has a thinner coat, she hardly even has the thicker cottony undercoat. My friend has two pups and they both have the thick cottony coat, could there be something wrong with Sophie's? When I purchased her(non-registered) I was shown her sire and dam...the sire had a beautiful smooth silky coat(like a yorkie) and the dam had the thicker cottony coat. My question is...could Sophie's look this way because she is going to take after her sire? I don't know what an adult silky coated shih tzu looks like as a pup, is there a difference in the coats at this young of an age? Just so you know I have been bathing her at least once per week as we are outside a lot and she loves to get into my flower beds. I also just started to change her puppy food from Chicken Soup for the puppy lovers soul to Orijen for puppies.

Thanks for any advise you can offer.

Answer
Hi Tammy - Sophie is sooooooo cute!  Don't worry as she still has a puppy coat.  She will blow this coat and things will be changing in the next few months.
How about getting some Pure Salmon oil - Yummy chummies or Grizzley brands - Place 1 teaspoon per day into her food .

Also, the foods you mentioned are excellent!  Good job.

Don't give her a full bath every week - How about getting some Foam Waterless bath and baby wipes..
I like Miracle Coat Waterless Bath FOAM..-  just a size of a dime on a baby wipe will do the trick.  ( wet the baby wipe and squeeze then a small foam of Miracle Coat) -
This will get her nice and clean.

Give her a bath only 2 x per month - if possible ( a full bath in the tub)-
Too many baths will dry out her coat.

Good Luck
I hope this helps
