Question
Hello, We adopted 2 9 year old shih tzu's in in June 2010. They were paper trained. They are housebroken now, but one of them will pee in the house when were not around, if we forget to gate them in their room. I read in another post that this may be a dominance problem. I don't think this dog "respects" me, so this makes sense. I don't know what to do. Thank you

Answer
Hi Sandra, That was Wonderful of you to adopt two older shih tzu doggies!  Thanks for adopting.
I wish more folks would take in older dogs.
Before we consider it a behavior problem, please get him checked by your Vet for a low grade UTI.
Some males can have a very small UTI that encourages them to Mark the house.  Also, if he was never neutered then this can be a dominance situation.

Continue to keep them gated when you are not able to watch the little Devil...
Use the Male belly band or Bad boy pants when he has " run  of  the  house".
The male belly band will encourage him to NOT pee in the house -  He will pee and get his belly wet.  They don't like to feel wet.
