Question
I keep having problems with my 3 year old female shih-tzu with her having diarrhea.I take her to the vet they do the test and everything comes back negative.Last time they even did blood work. I'm cooking for her now because she is a picky eater. Last night she had boiled chicken with peas and carrots. This is nothing new and she didn't have anything out of the ordinary. She woke me up in the middle of the night with diarrhea. Usually it will go away within a couple of days with home medication like Kaopectate or i will take her to the vet for meds. What is the problem? If she has no parasites? Please help? any suggestions on home remedies?

Answer
Are you changing her food a lot?  Is she under any stress? habit changes? you should find a good dry food and stick to it.  If your going to cook for her first just try a bland diet of rice only with not veggies or chicken etc.  hold food for at least 2 days only give her the water or pedialyte, then give her the rice, small amounts several times a day (you should notice her stool begin to harden up) then add the rice and the dry food together.. gradually lessen the rice until all you are giving is the dry food back to her normal meal schedule.
I like pro plan sensitive skin and stomach for my Tzu who get upset tummies or dry irritated skin, hot spots, etc.  She may not eat for a day or two but believe me when she gets hungry she will eat and love it.  Also to keep her hydrated put pedialyte in place of water in her bowl or bottle.  Use children's anti-diarrhea med or pepto and only for a few days.  If the diarrhea persist or is followed by blood or vomiting then take her to your vet or emergency clinic.
