Disturbing Behavior After Grooming

Question
Our 1-year old female Shih-tz's coat was pretty matted.  The groomer said the only way to get rid of the matted fur was to groom her pretty closely. Ever since she came home, she's been behaving very strangely. She seems to be in some kind of discomfort. All she wants to do is sit on soft surfaces.  She walks in a funny sideways way.  She also keeps jumping up every few minutes and licking her anus and tail area. We can't see anything outwardly wrong like bruises or cuts.  We're worried by this strange behavior. Why is this happening and what can we do?

This is normal behavior after such close grooming for a Shih Tzu.  She will slowly improve once she has become accustomed to the closeness of the cut and air and other sensations she is feeling across the skin.  She may have some razor burn as well, check with your veterinarian about something topical to soothe it.  You could check as well to see if she may need to have her anal glands expressed this or worming.  But if it has only occurred since the haircut, I'm sure it is the haircut because I've seen it in a lot of Shih Tzu's after having such a close cut for the first time.  I have seen them act so bad as far as holding urine and getting bladder infections, shaking, scooting their bottoms on the floor, spinning, howling and crying.. but it will get better .  Just comfort her, try putting some powder or aloe on the bottom and just baby her a bit more than usual till some of the hair comes back.
Hope this helps.  Be sure she keeps groomed well so she won't have to suffer through this again.. that's for sure.  Good Luck!
