Question
Gigi has had a problem with chewing since day one, my bedspreads, covers, rug binding, almost anything rag, although not the rag toys I buy her.  It is getting expensive replacing bedspreads, etc.  Very early this morning she got my crochet coverlet.  How do I get her to stop?  It does seem to be anxiety driven, but not sure.  She was a pet store gift pup, most likely puppy mill and taken to early from her mother.  I just adore her, but she is protective, jealous, and rules the pet houshold, a Bichon pushover, and very tame feral cat. Any suggestions?

Answer
To begin with, don't buy her anymore rag toys.  That encourages her that the "rags" or any fabric like things are o.k to chew on (whether or not she plays with the toys) give her ice cubes, carrot sticks, get her a kong chew toy fill it with peanut butter (its a rubber chew toy at petsmart).  When you see her going to the objects you don't want her to chew on  say NO and give her one of the other things I mentioned above.    You are the pack leader you are the boss, if she is doing something wrong, correct her, put her in time out.  I have one kennel in my home of 6 tzu and if one of them gets out of control I say NO Time Out and they go in the kennel for a minimum of 15 minutes.  I also have a fly swat that I have never used on any of them (just the flies) but the sound it makes when I hit the counter, gets their attention and they stop... it is a matter of diversion , and they go to doing something you want them to do.  Sounds like maybe she needs a little exercise, do you walk her?  they love to run and play and if they don't get enough exercise they can get bored and when they get bored they get destructive.  Try taking her out some.  Hope some of these suggestions work.
