Question
My 8-year-old female Shih Tzu is considered a chocolate -  brown nose, stawberry red hair, brown and blue eyes. She's also an Imperial size, so her head and body is shaped smaller than the standard breed. In the past five weeks, she has changed from red to honey blonde and the groomer says it permanent - the new hair is blonde. There have been NO changes in environment, diet, etc. The only new thing was a teeth-cleaning that required a general anethestic. The vet says that couldn't have affected the change, but he has no idea what did. I've just had $600 worth of tests done on her endorcrine system and everything was fine. We're all at our wit's end. Why has the radical change occurred? Have you ever heard of such a thing? Please help!!

Answer
Hi Mary - Well the color change must be genetic... I know it seems odd but only a light to Dark change will mean Major problems...
Many times there is a iron problem when they go light to dark.
So, I sure don't think your have a problem.  I bet her mom, dad, or grandparents did this  color change in the past.

So, don't worry - it is odd but should fine...Sorry you spent so much money on this - your vet should have told you that going to a lighter color is not a big risk in health.  Wow 600.00 spent on this?
Some just change color in the older age - she is 8 yrs old...

Place her on a good supplement to protect her immune system...
