my Fiance & my shih tzu

Question
For the past four years i have had an adorable fun-loving Shih-tzu, Fievel. He has always been a finicky eater. I am now engaged to a wonderful man but we disagree entirely on what to feed the dog. I feed Fievel people food. Every morning & evening i give him a plate of rice with either chicken or turkey. I also sometimes include a cooked veggie with it. I no longer give him scraps from the table or anything like that. I think this is great for my dog. While some people think i'm wrong for feeding him people food, i have actually read that it is GOOD for them.
My fiance wants to begin feeding him regular dog food. While i understand this would be SUPER convenient, i do not want it to be nasty full-of-chemicals dog food! I believe this is harmful. Am i wrong?
If there IS a good dog food for the shih tzu, what is it? My fiance just called me & said he picked up some "Old Roy Soft & Moist Beef & Cheese flavor" dog food from Walmart. I am not sure if this is good. It is the same food his parent's feed their dog, which is a Rhodesian Ridgeback! These are two entirely different breeds. I don't know what to do to convince him. He believes that if he feeds Fievel this dog food & Fievel doesn't eat it, it's because he is just being ornery. I think it is not the best dog food. And that if there IS a good dog food for him, it'd be all natural & cost a fortune.
Please tell me what i should tell my fiance. Assuming he's wrong! ;) If i'm wrong, i need to know that as well!
