Question
I have a litter of puppies that do not seem to be growing as fast as they usually do.  I am supplement feeding them 3X a day and they are nursing.  The mom is 7 years old and I bred her one last time to keep a female from her.  Does the milk get less nutritious as they get older?  Also, what is an average daily weight gain?  These babies were going backwards at first but are now gaining about .1oz per day.  My puppies usually gain close to 1oz per day.  They want to eat but their bellies get distended quickly when fed.  Any ideas?

Answer
Sounds like they may be retaining alot of gas or may be full of worms.  The milk should be checked to make sure it is the right color and consistancy.  If it is greenish or tacky take the pups of the teets (mom has an infection)Try patting the pups after feedings, also she may not be getting them to go potty and you may have to do it (clean them with a wet one on the bottom like momma does with her tongue and do the same to their lilly and turtle) see if the potty.  Sometimes the older moms decide they don't want to clean up after the pups and this causes them to distend and they usually don't nurse as well because they don't have the room to eat as much and therefore don't gain the wait.  Hope this helps.  Let me know.
