Question
QUESTION:  my husband feeds our 2 yr old shih tzu dog food with a little bit of a bagel with butter on it mixed in for breakfast and at night we feed him chicken (boneless breast) and rice that we boil
how much /cups  should i feed him at one time? we have been doing this for a while and it seems to be OK. I think my husband feeds him too much!! He never measures it

ANSWER: I'm not so sure that the bagel and butter is such a good idea (I'm surprised your puppy has not gotten diarrhea or skin issues) Tzu usually do not do well with such products.  As for the chicken and rice it is ok as long as your not adding spice, fat, etc and probably 1/2 -3/4 of a cup should be sufficient.  And that is the chicken and rice only not with the other food.  If your mixing it with dry food then use 1/2 portion dry and 1/2 portion chicken rice.  And as long as he is getting a bit of exercise he should be just fine.  Hope this helps.

QUESTION: what kind of skin issues?? (Mr Boo our 2yr old shih tzu)
he has only had diarrhea once and that was before we started with the bagle and butter. I take it the butter is worse for him then the bagel?? Also what should I do if he is choking on something?? The other day he was choking (like he could not breathe)and I picked him up by his back legs (a little off the floor) and tapped his sides and tummy. he was OK in a minute or so. we think it was a little piece of his chew bone. SCARY!!

Answer
Hot spots, dry skin, etc.  Yes, the butter is not good for him but, neither is the white bread of the bagel.  You did good, also, don't give him those time of chew bones again.  Once they get soft and to the point he can swallow them take them away.  I usually just give them the nylon type and for treats I give them mother hubbard all natural cookies.
