Question
I have a female Shih Tzu 6 Years old at 6.6 lbs. That I would like to mate with my 1 year old male Shih Tzu that is 13.8 lbs. Will this endanger my female?  Thank You Joe

Sorry, I thought I had answered this question earlier, I guess it did not go through.  I'm not sure what your reason is for wanting to breed this female at such a late time in her life #1, #2 I personally would not breed her because of her size (I only breed within AKC standards www.akc.org then look at shih tzu breed standards) they should be between 9-16 lbs., #3 you would probably be looking at c-section delivery and other complications at whelping time (as for mating your best bet because of the size difference would be  A.I. only.. I would not attempt natural mating you would probably hurt the female in the tie.  All in all this is a breeding that I would not attempt or consider period.  If you'd like a second opinion check with any local veterinarian, a third opinion check with any reputable breeder (note I said reputable breeder).  I'm not saying that it can not be done and that it has not been done and that it won't continue to be done... I'm just saying that it is not something that I myself would ever do and or is it something that AKC or any reputable breeder looking to follow guidelines or improve breed standards or someone wanting to do things in the best interest of the animal would do.
Hope this helps.
There is a lot of helpful information online and in the bookstores and libraries on proper breeding, etc.  Make sure to do all your research before attempting to breed so your prepared for all the little surprises that will come your way not every delivery is a happy one.
