Question
I have just rescued two shi tzu dogs from a kennel...2 yrs old, brother(15 lobs) and sister(7 lbs).  No clue what their dog food was all this time.....I would like to give them real food but the advice out there is so extensive and conflicting....can you help me with something simple?  A friend uses her G Forman grill to cook up a hamb. pattie twice a day for her pug...adds fresh carrots and sweet potato.  I can do this for my two shi tzu dogs if this will be a healthy and sufficient for them...what do you think?  Thank you so much...I love these two little dogs!

Answer
There are so many diets out there and because of the food scare not too long ago a lot of breeders and pet owners have changed to an all natural food source.  Before doing anything you should have them both examined by a vet for any health issues (heart, kidney disease) once you are clear and especially with the heavy boy you can start a program.  They will be on two different diets because of their weights and if health issues are there that will play a role as well.   I say check their health because if there is problems with kidney or heart you have to be careful with salts and fats, and other things you feed them.  For now Purina Pro Selects All Natural Turkey/Rice or Salmon/Rice Dry Kibble would be good.  You can give them fresh carrots and sweet potatoes cut for treats in place of dog cookies but don't over do it.   Mine also like to get Ice Cubes (keeps their teeth nice and white too).  But really have them checked with your vet, then talk with him about a good program for Raw Diet (which is what your referring too).  Hope this helps.
