Question
Have two shitzu, male and female. Just got the male yesterday and want to breed the two.How do we go about doing this, or do we just let nature take it's course?  Also, if we stud out our male, what happens?Do we let the other owners take him or do we take the female?  New to this..

Answer
Why do you want to breed the two together is my first question?  Do they compliment each other?  Would they make an improvement on the breed?  Are they sound in health?  Have they both been tested for brucellosis?  Have they both had a complete health exam for hip, kidney, heart and eye disease?  If the answer to these questions are yes and you can give me a good reason for why your wanting to breed then get back with me on the steps to responsible breeding practices.  As for using your male for a stud he will need to be proven 1st before most other breeders will want to pay for his services, and they will ask you the questions that I just asked you above about your male as far as his health testing.  Then they will want to know if you are insured, in case something happens to their female while she is in your care, (generally the female goes to the male) you do not want the female in control of the situation, you want the male to be in control of the female when she is in season and it is better that she be more passive and she is general that way when she is in a stranger environment.  Also, you will have to be certified to perform A.I. if a natural does not occur or have a veterinarian service that can provide the service for you or if you miss a breeding you will be refunding some stud service money.  For now you might want to study on ethical breeding and whelping techniques.  Breed a few litters with the pair you have if they turn out to be sound enough to breed together and worry about stud service later on.  There are a few great books by Myra Sevant Harris you can purchase online.  Hope this helps and good luck.  And by the way, I'm not trying to be ugly just honest and I do have several post already on here on steps  for breeding, when to tell your girl is in heat, etc.  You really do need to breed for ALL the right reasons and should only breed when you know what your breeding to (please)
