Question
They're finally here! They are now 1 week and 2 days old, and it seems that the mothers milk may have dried up. The pups are trying to drink it but there fussing and sounds like there struggling to get anything out. What kind of supplement would you suggest...(since you have been here every step of the way...THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE HELP TOO!) Is the recipe milk better than the supplement you buy?

Answer
A temporary replacement can be made by combining two egg yolks with 1 cup of homogenized milk or goat's milk. Milk substitutes for puppies can be purchased from veterinarians and certain pet, drug and grocery stores.  Also, check with your vet about a supplement that can be given to the mom to help her produce more milk.  There are products on the market such as LacToll 100% safe and natural combination of herbal ingredients for optimizing colostrum and milk production in nursing pets.  This is fairly common and there is not always a clear reason for the problem. Production of colostrum and later mature milk are crucial for the health and well-being of the litter and a female dog who is unable to nurse her litter properly puts them at risk. Signs that the mother may not be producing enough milk are pups jerking at the teats or not nursing continuously for any length of time. It is also important to monitor the puppies weight gain carefully especially in the first two weeks of life. Remember that you may also have to help potty them as well.  And you will need to purchase the little nursing bottles and poke holes in the nipples.  Make sure that the moms' teats are not hard, red, or fevered.  If so take her to the vet and she needs to be treated for mastitis. Good Luck and hope everything turns out well.  Take the pups on to the vet and get them some formula and checked out and make sure they are not becoming malnourished or dehydrated they may be needing IV's.
