QUESTION: Hi Kim,

Do you know of a reputable breeder in New England who has relatively small standards? Say 18-20 inch females? Minis aren't the right temperament for me. I wouldn't take a chance on a klein/moyen. But I do not want a tall rangy poodle.

The lady on the bottom might be more what you are looking for if you want a smaller standard.  Be sure to go and visit the kennel and if you can, meet the parents of the puppies.  You can learn alot about the breeder and her dogs if you actually get to see where they are living, their temperment, and if you can meet the puppies.  
If the breeder is hesitant about letting you see the dogs or where they are kept, this should be a sign that you may not want one of these puppies.  I do think that these 2 breeders are reputable though.  

Also, here is the addy of the Poodle Rescue in New England.  Even though they are a rescue group, they may be able to put you in contact with someone who breeds Standards in your area.

I'm curious about your sense that Maureen Ziko might have smaller than usual standards. I don't find a website for her, so I wonder how you got your info.? I 've been in contact with the other people you suggest, and none has small standards, or info about where to find a small standard. Thanks.

Hello again,
The reason that I assume that she might have smaller Standards is that alot of breeders that have both Standard and Miniature Poodles will interbreed them, producing either large Miniatures or small Standards.   I am not saying that this paticular breeder practices this way, but if she does then she might have a smaller Standard.  

You might have to go across State lines to find what you are looking for.  If you do find a smaller Standard, you might check again with the Poodle Rescue group to see if they have people that can help get the dog to you.  Alot of times, rescue groups have people all over the country that can move dogs around if need be.
