Last week my 11 month old miniature poodle was throwing up and didn't eat for 4 days.  after 2 days of the vet giving him fluids, antibiotic shots, and finally an ultrasound, he was diagnosed with enteritis of the upper GI.  we put him on clavmox antibiotic and he's been fine and feeling good, but started vomiting again this weekend.  he throws up an hour or two after eating, eats it again if i don't get it quick enough, and sometimes keeps it down the second time.  today, he has thrown up 4 times. the food looks very undigested. he is otherwise fine, playing, drinking etc.  his bloodwork and the ultrasound checked out fine last week.  i had been feeding him good, plain yogurt with his food, but was away from home this weekend and didn't have any.  that's when the vomiting started back.  after he threw up tonight, he was hungry and looking for food, so i fed him a tablespoon of kibble mixed with about 1/4 c yogurt.  so far it's stayed down.  the kibble is orijen puppy.  i switched him from innova to orijen after the enteritis diagnosis, thinking he could be reacting to the grain in innova puppy.  he was fine on the orijen for 5 days before the vomiting started again.  I'm worried about him, but honestly, i don't have another 600 to give to the vet, and his demeanor is normal.  I'm thinking about putting him on yogurt and veggies with a little boiled chicken for a few days to see if it helps.  I've only had him for 2 months, and he's my first dog, so I'm a novice, and need advice.
Thank you!

Answer
Hello Tonya,
I have been looking around my search engine, but nothing conclusive is coming up about GastroEnteritis in dogs much except that it is a very general term for stomach upset and should resolve itself within a couple of days or so.
In the meantime, I would feed your dog 4-5 small meals more frequently rather than 1-2 larger meals.  You can feed either Yogurt or Cottage Cheese and a small amount of dry kibble mixed with some canned food.  You might even try Chicken and brown rice mixed in with the yogurt or cottage cheese if he keeps throwing up the dry kibble.  Be sure to provide plenty of fresh water for him as vomiting can cause dehyrdation if the dog doesn't replace the liquid he is throwing up.

On a rather disguesting note, its not harmful if your dog eats the vomit.  It will sometimes stay down better on a second round.  It is gross for us to see it, but it doesn't hurt the dog.  If he continues to vomit, you can give your dog a dose of Pepto Bismol.  For a dog his size, he can take 3 cc (about a teaspoon) of the "Pink Stuff" to help settle his stomach.  You can give it every 4-6 hours until he stops vomiting.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
