I have a female(9 months old) & a male (13 months).They "hooked up" about 3 weeks ago and i'm worried she may be pregnant.A friend told me that she can't get pregnant until she is in heat,is this true? She has not been in heat yet but she is getting fat,wide &her nipples are swelling

YOur friend is right they can not get pregnant if they are not in heat.  HOWEVER, if they tied then your female was , INDEED, in heat.  9 mo is about the right time for a female to go into heat for the first time.  A male will NEVER tie with a female unless that female is in heat.  So you missed her heat but your male didnt.  And it sound that indeed she is pregnant.  You need to get an xray done at 45 days to check on the puppies.  Your vet will probably want to have another one done just before she is due to have puppies to make sure that she is capable of having the puppies without help.  This female is WAY to young to be bred and you need to plan for complications.  Having your vet ready and waiting incase of a c-section is a MUST.
