toy poodle mix

Question
Dear K:
I recently met a little dog that seems to be just the ticket for me. His owner said he was a poodle mixed with some kind of terrier.  She said this combo is becoming popular and a common mix of breeds.  He was lively, cuddly, and she says he's jealous of her attention (all qualities of toy poddles anyway I think, but there was something extra about him). Do you have any idea what it might be?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Chris,

Well I've owned several poodle mixes as well as just plain ol' poodles - and I think when you mix a poodle with another breed, it sort of takes some of the nervousness usually present in the purebred dog out of the mix.  My favorite (and still missed) mix looked alot like a "Benji" sort of dog - and she was smart as a whip, fearless, curious and loving.

I can't put my finger on exactly what makes the mix puppies special, but I do think poodles have been somewhat overbred and a mix tends to accentuate the good qualities of the poodle and yet add a bit of stability somehow. Additionally, poodles tend to consider themselves people, and not a pack animal, whereas a mix seems to get on better with other dogs AND retain the love of people as well. I'm not sure how else to explain it, as it is a completely subjective observation, however, it does sound like you've found your perfect companion animal.  I wish both of you much love and enjoyment of your life together!!

Warmly,

Kathryn
