Question
I have a 4 and a half lb. toy red poodle(5 generation) female bred to a 4 lb red toy poodle male and I want to make sure she has the right diet.  She is 3 years old and has had one puppie freely last year.  She is healthy by looking at her but they mean alot to me and I want her to be as healrty as possible, so she'll have enough milk to support her litter.  If you could get me in the right direction to finding a very good diet for her I would be very happy.

Answer
Hello Marilynn,
Most of the commerical diets out there for your dog are fine to feed your dog.  The best foods are going to be a Meat based diet with less of the corn, grain, wheat or potato.  Nutro Natural Choice foods are good, as are Natures Recipe, Bil-Jac, Royal Canin for Poodles, or you can make up your own food to feed your dog.
You can give your dog healthy foods such as carrots, apples, peas (the purple kind is the best) and things like eggs, and Lamb meat instead of chicken or beef if you think your dog may be allergic to Beef or Chicken.  Here is a diet you can use that I made up, that provides vitamins and nutrients that is good for a dogs skin and coat.

1 lb Lamb burger, Chicken burger or Hamburger, cooked and most of the fat drained off.
1 can Salmon
1 can Sardines in Olive Oil
1 cup Spinach blended with the oil of the sardines
1 egg scrambled
1 1/2 cup Special K or Total Cereal
1 Apple Blended (or you can use 1/2 cup of Applesauce)
1/8 tsp Garlic powder
1 grated carrot
1/2 cup brown rice, cooked using chicken broth for better flavor
1/2 Tablespoon Cottage Cheese, this is optional and can be added per feeding rather than made up in advance.
You can also add fruits or veggies that your dog likes, or take out things that you think your dog will turn his nose up at.
This recipe is for a large dog, but if you think this is more than you would use in a week, it freezes nicely.  It has vitamins and minerals that are good for a dogs coat and skin.  I would use 1/2 of the recipe and 1/2 of your dogs normal dry food for now.

After the puppies are born, you can give your female some of the milk replacer for puppies, which will be good for her.  You can buy the liquid kind and add it to her diet.

You should also have your dog checked by your Vet just to make sure she is healthy during her pregnancy and also after the puppies are born.

I hope this helps you some.  Please feel free to ask me if you have other questions about whelping or delivery, or about puppy care once the puppies are born (or other Poodle questions in general).
